OBSERVATION OF WORLD HEPATITIS AWARENESS DAY (WHAD)Oct 1, 2007 IN BANGLADESH


OBSERVATION OF WORLD HEPATITIS AWARENESS DAY (WHAD) IN BANGLADESH Liver Foundation of Bangladesh organized the observation of the 4th World Hepatitis Awareness Day in Bangladesh, in collaboration with European Liver Patients Association ( ELPA ) and WHO, Europe. Liver Foundation of Bangladesh made all out arrangements for observation of the day in befitting manner, which was first time in Bangladesh. This Year forty countries of the world from Brussels to Bangladesh staged different awareness program highlighting the prevention of Hepatitis B & C among the people. Theme of this year was “Get Tested”. Make a blood test to detect the presence of Hepatitis B & C in your blood. If negative take vaccine for hepatitis B and if positive, consult the doctor for assessment of the liver condition and viral status. Take personal protective care for both hepatitis B & C. Events of the day include: SEMINAR : Major General Dr A S M Matiur Rahman (Retd), Honorable Advisor, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Religious Affairs Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh attended as Chief Guest, Major General Prof. ( Retd) A R Khan, Chairman, Board of management, BIRDEM, Big General Prof. Abdul Malik (Retd), National Professor, Founder Secretary General, National Heart Foundation, Prof. A K Azad Khan, President, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh & Hon. President, Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society, Mr. Emad Ul Ameen, Director, Human Resources, Grameenphone Ltd. attended as special guest. The seminar was chaired by Prof. S N Samad Choudhury, Chairman, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. Program started at 12 o’clock by recitation from Holy Quran by Dr. Mohsin Kabir, Treasurer, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. Welcome address by Mrs. Zeba Rasheed Chowdhury, Founder member of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. She describes the background of the foundation. Prof. Mohammad Ali, Founder Secretary General of the foundation was the main speaker. He described the different events of observation of the WHAD day in Bangladesh. He narrated the way of starting of the liver foundation, its phages of development, all the activities & future plan of the foundation. Prof. A Q M Mohsen, Hon. Vice Chairman described the different ways of awareness about hepatitis B & C in Bangladesh. Hon. Chief Guest, Major General Dr A S M Matiur Rahman (Retd) appreciated all the activities of the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. He declared that the WHAD (October 1, 2007) will remain as a milestone for the prevention of liver diseases in Bangladesh. He expressed his eagerness to offer all-out cooperation and support for the activities of the Liver foundation from the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. A filmed massage of Nobel Laureate Prof. Mohammad Yens who is Life Member & Member, Board of Advisor of the Liver Foundation was presented in the seminar. He expressed his willingness to support the activities of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh and invited the people of Bangladesh to come forward to reinforce the activities of the foundation for prevention of liver diseases in Bangladesh. All the special guests appreciated the humanitarian efforts of the Liver foundation and expressed their eagerness to continue support in various ways for Awareness, Prevention, Treatment, Education and Research on liver diseases in Bangladesh. Prof. M Anise Raman, Hon. joint Secretary General of Liver Foundation expressed thanks and gratitude to everybody for attending the seminar. Other programs of the day include: Television program on ATN Bangla, BTV & Channel i. Publication of Souvenir with massages from Hon. President of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Honorable Advisor, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Laureate, Mayor, Dhaka City Corporation, President, European Liver Patients Association ( ELPA ), Director, Human Resource, Grameenphone Ltd., Hon. Chairman, Hon. Vice Chairman and Hon. Secretary General, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. Hepatitis information booth in 25 points of Dhaka city. Distribution of Leaflets & Posters in Dhaka city and other districts head quarters of Bangladesh. Awareness information board at different public places. Audio Slogans for awareness on liver diseases in different public points of Dhaka city. Publication of supplements in daily newspapers. Online quiz competition. World hepatitis awareness day was observed first time in Bangladesh. There was appreciation from people all over the country. News was telecast in all the TV Channels. The news of the events was also published in all the daily newspapers. Radio Bangladesh also broadcasted a special program highlighting the activities of the awareness day and appreciated all the efforts of the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh.
