Successful Observation of World Hepatitis Day in Bangladesh on May 19, 2008


Liver Foundation of Bangladesh organized the observation of first World Hepatitis Day (WHD) in Bangladesh on 19th May 2008. The activities of the day was organized by the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh in affiliation with the World Hepatitis Alliance. Preparation for observation of the day started from long time. The preparations include, launching of AM I NUMBER 12 (amikinomborbaro) programme from Bengali new year’s day (14th April 2008). Free screening of 220 orphans children of Sarkari Shishu Paribar on 10th May. Press conference in the National Press Club on 16th May. Observation of WHD on (19th May 2008) was started with a colorful rally, from Central Martyr Memorial (Shahid Minar). Hundreds of children and other people attended rally. The most attraction of the rally was symbolic large liver in which “Healthy Liver for Every Body” was written on its surface. The seminar was held at the Shahid Ziaur Rahman auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum, Dhaka. The chief guest of the seminar was National Prof. Brig. Gen.(Rtd) Abdul Malek, Founder Secretary General, National Heart Foundation and former Advisor of Health, Govt. of The People’s Republics of Bangladesh. Special guests were Prof. Jamilur Reja Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University. Prof. A. K Azad Khan, President, Bangladesh Diabetic Association and Hon. President, Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society, Dr. Kamal Abdul Naser Choudhury, Director General (Adl. Secretary), Ministry of Social Welfare. Prof. Md. Abul Faiz, Director General, Health services & Prof. Hosne Ara Tahmin, Adl. Director General of Health, Govt. of The People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The seminar was attended by Doctors, Teachers, Students Principal, Head Moulana, Head of The Schools, Imams of Mosque and Head of Other Religious Organizations, Distinguished personalities, leaders, Journalists, Children of Sarkari Shishu Paribar attended the seminar. Many patient of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh also attended the seminar and rally. The seminar was chaired by Prof. S. N Samad Choudhury, Chairman, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. Welcome address was given by Prof. A. Q. M Mohsen, Vice Chairman, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. The keynote speaker was by Prof. Mohammad Ali, Secretary General, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. He presented the world scenario of Hepatitis B&C and Bangladesh perspective of both viral liver diseases. He quoted the success story of Taiwan for gross reduction of prevalence of hepatitis B by awareness and mass vaccination programme in that country. He also informed about the publication of first World Hepatitis Atlas and incorporation of Bangladesh in the Atlas. He showed a copy of the first World Hepatitis Atlas to the distinguished audience. Prof. Mohammad Ali suggested mass vaccination & screening programme in Bangladesh. He specially emphasized the need for compulsory screening of all pregnant women in Bangladesh. The new born baby should get first dose of Hepatitis vaccine and Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (according to HBeAg status of mother) within 24 hours of birth. He also suggested for making a vaccine production plant in Bangladesh, so that our people can get the vaccine in affordable price. It will help greatly in mass vaccination programme in Bangladesh. He also suggested for reduction of cost of medicine for treatment of liver disease. He requested the pharmaceuticals, who are marketing the liver disease related medicine to come forward for prevention and awareness programme. Chief guests and all the special guest welcomed the suggestions. The seminar was ended by the speech of the chairperson. Vote of thanks given by Prof. M Anisur Rahman, Joint Secretary General of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh.The free vaccination of 200 orphan children was inaugurated by the chief guest.There was special TV programme in ATN Bangla and Radio Today. All the TV channels and News Papers highlighted the activities of the day.
