Prof. Mohammad Ali attended the 35th annual meeting of Bangladesh Medical Association in the UK Ltd. at Oxford, UK

Prof. Mohammad Ali attended the 35th annual meeting of Bangladesh Medical Association in the UK Ltd. as Invited Speaker at The Oxford Belfry Hotel, Oxford, UK on July 15 -17, 2011.
He delivered two speeches; the first one on ‘Experience of First Successful Liver Transplantation in Bangladesh’. It may be mentioned here that the 1st successful Liver Transplantation of Bangladesh was performed at BIRDEM hospital on June 03, 2010. Prof. Mohammad Ali leaded the Liver Transplant team.
The second speech was on the `Liver Foundation of Bangladesh’- a philanthropic organization for Prevention, Treatment, Education and Research on liver diseases in Bangladesh.
Prof. Ali is the founder Secretary General of the organization which is also a member of World Hepatitis Alliance, Geneva.

Reception of Prof. Mohammad Ali at Tower Hamlets, London, UK

Prof. Mohammad Ali was accorded reception from the Mayor of Tower Hamlets Mr. Luthfer Rahman on July 21, 2011 at the Tower Hamlets, London, UK. All the councilors of Tower Hamlets attended in this cordial reception party at Tower Hamlets office building.
Prof. Ali emphasized the need for cooperation of Tower Hamlets and Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. He also informed that the Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh donated land at Sylhet for establishing a specialized Liver Hospital. He pleaded their support and cooperation for making the Liver Foundation Hospital, Sylhet.
The Mayor appreciated the activities of the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh and realized the importance of establishing a specialized Liver hospital at Sylhet. He assured all out cooperation for this noble cause.

Liver Foundation of Bangladesh observed World Hepatitis Day 2011 in Bangladesh

The seminar was held at Showkat Osman Auditorium, National Public Library, Shahbagh, Dhaka. Chief Guest was Mr. Enamul Hoque Mostofa Shaheed, Hon. Minister of Social Welfares, Special Guests were Dr. Arun Bhadra Thapa, WHO country representative of Bangladesh, National Professor M.R Khan, Prof. Mirza Mazharul Islam, Prof. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Attorney General of Govt. of Bangladesh, advocate Mahbub-e-Alam and Prof. Faruque Ahmed, Secretary General, Bangladesh society of Gastroenterology. The seminar was chaired by Prof. M.R.Khan. Large number of Dhaka University students, distinguished personalities, doctors, patients & other guests attended the seminar. Video massage of Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General, WHO, Geneva & World Hepatitis day video presentation of WHO, was displayed in the beginning of the seminar. Chief Guest Hon. Minister appreciated the long continued efforts of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh in the field of creation of awareness on hepatitis. Dr. Arun Bhadra Thapa expressed his great satisfaction that this is the first official WHD observed throughout the world under the banner of WHO. He is very happy that he could attend that historical seminar in Bangladesh, organized by Liver foundation. He is fully aware about the long continued efforts of LFB in the creation of hepatitis awareness in Bangladesh along with WHA. He assured all out support & co-operation of WHO to the activities of the foundation in coming days. The Key note speech was delivered by Prof. Mohammed Ali, founder Secretary General of LFB. He stressed for the implementation of the birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine, for which he is advocating since last four years. He made a proposal to WHO country representative to make a programme for national population based survey for detection of incidence of Hepatitis B & C in Bangladesh. He also proposed for making a fund to help the under privileged people living with viral hepatitis.
Then National Prof. M.R.Khan, Prof. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Prof. Faruque Ahmed, Advocate Mahbub-e-Alam put emphasis on awareness of viral hepatitis in their speech.

2nd Successful Liver Transplant at BIRDEM, Dhaka

Second liver transplantation was successfully done in BIRDEM, on August 06, 2011. The recipient Mr. Reazul Islam (35 yrs.), diabetic, College teacher from Golachipa, Potuakhali. He has been suffering from Hepatitis B virus infection since 2002 and developed Cirrhosis of liver while he was on antiviral medications. He developed end stage liver disease with repeated episodes of encephalopathy and refractory ascites and hyperspleenism since 2008. He received treatment in different centers, home and abroad. During this period he was treated at BIRDEM Hospital on several occasions and finally was advised liver transplant as the last hope of survival. The donor, Mr. Kium Azad (38 yrs), a maternal uncle of the recipient came forward to donate part of his liver as a life saving measure. The transplant was organized by the Dept. of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, BIRDEM. The Liver transplant team was headed by the chief Liver transplant Surgeon, Prof. Mohammad Ali. The liver transplant team of Prof. Subash Gupta of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, India helped in the transplant. The department of Gastro Intestinal Hepato-Biliary- Pancreatic Disorder (GHPD),Surgery, Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Transfusion Medicine, Radiology & Imaging Services, Laboratory & Immunology Services, Nursing Services of BIRDEM & ICHRI ,Organ transplant Unit & Administration of BADAS took active part in the transplant. The operation theatre facilities, Dept. of Anesthesiology, Laboratory services & Administration of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute (ICHRI) actively participated and extended all cooperation. The transplant was done on August 6, 2011 at two well equipped operation theaters of ICHRI. Two teams of twenty five members performed the operation, starting from 9 AM till 01:30 AM, next day (about 16 hours). Right lobe of the donor liver (weighing 735 gram) was retrieved. The cirrhotic liver of the recipient was totally removed and the donated right lobe (Graft) was implanted to the recipient at the same site. Both the donor and recipient tolerated the procedure. The recipient was in the Transplant ICU and donor in the Surgical ICU in the immediate post transplant period. The recipient was shifted to Cabin and doing well. Donor was released from hospital on August 23, 2011. We express thanks and gratitude to the Dutch Bangla Bank Foundation for substantial and generous contribution to the liver transplant facilities. We are thankful to ICHRI for providing their operation theater complexes and other facilities for the transplant. We are also thankful to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Gastro liver Hospital & Research Institute & Popular Diagnostic Centre for extending their support in the transplant to make it successful. It may be mentioned here that, the first ever liver transplant of Bangladesh was successfully performed at BIRDEM on June 03, 2010. Both the recipient and the donor are doing well and completed the 1st year of post transplant period. They are back to their normal life and activities. The first successful Liver transplant at BIRDEM received wide spread national and international appreciation. Bangladesh has been enrolled as one of the liver transplant country in the world since 2010.We believe that the 2nd successful liver transplant at BIRDEM will reinforce the image of advancement of medical science and technology of Bangladesh in the international arena . Mercantile Bank Ltd. donated for endoscopic facilities of Liver Foundation
Mercantile Bank Ltd. donated for establishment of endoscopic facilities of the Liver foundation of Bangladesh. The donation giving ceremony was held at the head office of Mercantile Bank Ltd, 61, Dilkusha C/A, Dhaka, on December 03, 2011.
The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Md. Abdul Jalil, MP, Chairman, Mercantile Bank Ltd. Welcome address was given by Mr. A.K.M. Shahidul Haque, Managing Director & CEO, Mercantile Bank Ltd. In his note, Mr. Haque elaborated the social activities of the Mercantile Bank Foundation. On behalf of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, Prof. Mohammad Ali, Founder Secretary General of the foundation highlighted the concept, principles & different activities of the Foundation. In his speech he narrated the dream of establishing a state-of-art facility (Centre of excellence) for treatment of all kinds of liver diseases in Bangladesh, which will be the first of its kind in the nation.
Mr. Md. Abdul Jalil, MP, the Chairman of Mercantile Bank Ltd. expressed deep satisfaction with the goals & activities of the Liver Foundation. He on behalf of the bank is highly motivated and encouraged to be with the Liver Foundation in establishing its goals. He also requested others to come forward to support humanitarian efforts of the Liver Foundation. He handed over the cheque of Tk. 11 Lac to Prof. Mohammad Ali, Secretary General and Prof. M Anisur Rahman, Joint Secretary General as first step of contribution for establishing endoscopic facilities of the Foundation.
Prof. Mohammad Ali handed over a memento to the chairman of the bank in recognition of donation & commitment of Mercantile Bank Ltd. to stand by the side of the liver foundation’s humanitarian effort.

Liver Foundation of Bangladesh observed Chittagong Hepatitis Day 2012

The Liver Foundation of Bangladesh observed the Chittagong Hepatitis Day (CHD) 2012 at Chittagong on 14th January 2012 by performing many events. All the events were designed to make awareness about viral hepatitis, "the silent killers".
The CHD 2012 was observed by Liver Foundation of Bangladesh with much enthusiasm. Dr. A F M Ruhul Huq, Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Mr. Enamul Huq Mostafa Shaheed, Minister of Social welfare, Dr. Md. Afsarul Amin MP, Minister of primary & mass education, Govt. of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Mohammad Monjur Alam, Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, Prof. A S M Fazlul Karim, President, Chattagram Maa o Shishu Hospital and Mr. Talukder Noman Anwar, Head of Marketing, Communication and Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Bangladesh gave special messages on the occasion of the day; it was published in the CHD 2012 Souvenir.
The day activities started with a colorful Awareness Rally; started from Badamtoli Point, Agrabad and ended at Chattagram Maa o Shishu Hospital after passing various points of the city. Hundreds of children, Students, Teachers, Doctors, elites, patients and common people attended the rally.
A well designed mobile Hepatitis Information Booth wrapped with awareness slogans distributed thousands of awareness leaflets to mass people at different prime locations of Chittagong city throughout the day.
A special Seminar was held in the Auditorium of Chattagram Maa o Shishu Hospital. Prof. A S M Fazlul Karim, President of Chattagram Maa o Shishu Hospital, Life member & Regional Head (Chittagong division) of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh presided over the seminar.
Dr. Md. Afsarul Amin MP, Minister, Primary & Mass Education was the chief guest on the occasion.
Brig. Gen. Dr. Fashiur Rahman, Director, Chittagong Medical College and Mr. Talukder Noman Anwar, Head of Marketing, Communication and Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Bangladesh attended as Special Guests.
At the beginning of the seminar, one minute silence and special prayer was offered for the departed soul of Late Prof. Sahadat Hossain, an eminent pediatrician of Chittagong.

The Key note speech was delivered by Prof. Mohammad Ali, Secretary General, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. He narrated the past and present activities of Liver Foundation and its future vision. He told that the Liver Foundation is playing a key part of the efforts to raise awareness of viral Hepatitis both nationally and internationally with active participation of World Hepatitis Alliance, Geneva. He appealed everyone to come forward for creating mass awareness on liver diseases in Bangladesh. Prof. Ali also urged the people, government and non government organizations to stand by the side of Liver Foundation for making a specialized center for liver diseases at Chittagong.
Prof. Dr. Aminul Islam, Former Head, Dept. of Medicine, Chittagong Medical College; Prof. Dr. Sayeeda Noor Jahan Bhuiya , Former Principal, Chittagong Medical College; Mr. S M Morshed Hossain, Vice President and Dr. Anjuman Ara, Secretary General, Chattagram Maa o Shishu Hospital welcomed the much needed viral hepatitis awareness program of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. They expressed their commitment to support the activities of the Liver Foundation and requested to stage this kind of awareness program every year at Chittagong.

Mr. Talukder Noman Anwar of HSBC Bangladesh expressed great satisfaction of the overall humanitarian activities of the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. He told that under the corporate sustainability program of HSBC; they are participating in Free Hepatitis B Vaccination Program of Liver Foundation of Bangladesh since 2007 and believes that HSBC will continue this program with Liver Foundation of Bangladesh in coming days.
Hon. Minister Dr. Md. Afsarul Amin MP in his speech as chief guest, welcomed the humanitarian efforts of Liver Foundation and thanked for performing CHD 2012 today. He said it will help substantially to create awareness of mass people on viral Hepatitis at his home district, Chittagong. He assured of all out support to the Liver Foundation in coming days and invited everyone to help and cooperate with the Foundation to fulfill its dream of making a Liver Foundation Centre at Chittagong.
At the end, Hon. Minister inaugurated the Free Hepatitis B Vaccination Program by vaccinating a child by himself.
It may be mentioned that under this Free Hepatitis B Vaccination Program, 415 orphan children of Sharkari Shishu Paribar (Govt. Children Home) of Potia, Roufabadh, Hathazari and Choto moni Nibash, Roufabadh, Chittagong was screened and vaccinated. This program was sponsored by HSBC, Bangladesh.

The Liver Foundation of Bangladesh observed the Chittagong Hepatitis Day (CHD) 2012 at Chittagong on 14th January 2012 by performing many events. All the events were designed to make awareness about viral hepatitis, "the silent killers".
The CHD 2012 was observed by Liver Foundation of Bangladesh with much enthusiasm.
